Like a musical dream-catcher, Jordan Merrick works tirelessly to make his dreams a reality. Having built a reputation as the poetic front man of Brisbane folk-blues ensemble Fugitive & The Vagabond, 2017 sees Jordan flying solo, delivering even more of his signature bush ballad tunes to eager ears.
Growing up on a mix of The Kinks, Roxy Music, AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Bob Dylan, it wasn’t until Jordan was 15 that he decided music was something he was interested in pursuing. Nine years later, with multiple Fugitive & The Vagabond songs rocketing to #1 on Triple J Unearthed, and his first two solo singles (Untitled #1 and You Gotta Go) receiving airplay on Triple J, it’s clear this troubadour has found his calling.
“I am so grateful my music resonates with people. As a musician, that’s what I hope for – that people will connect and feel something when they hear my music,” said Jordan.
“There have been many road blocks and battles with confidence along the way, but writing music brings me so much joy.”
After releasing Fugitive & The Vagabond’s debut album Novella late last year, Jordan turned his attention to crafting his debut solo EP In Colour, which is out this month. He says the record was a chance to branch off and concentrate on the raw, more traditionally folk songs he writes.
“After we finished our album tour, it was the right time to focus on my solo work. In Colour is very much a storybook of my life and life in general. It covers the vast emotions we feel, and emotions are never black and white.”
“I just want people to hear it, feel something new and hopefully enjoy it.”
Whether he’s with the band or a one-man show, Jordan continues to write candidly about his experiences in life. Like most up-and-coming musicians he’s overcome challenges, finding his niche in an industry where a “banding together” attitude goes a long way.
“I think the biggest challenge a musician faces starting out is building a network to get your foot in the door. There are a lot of people who make empty promises and take artists for a ride which can be disheartening. It is a hard industry and we all need to work together.”
While some people chase their dreams, Jordan Merrick is a man who catches them.
