Magenta Voyeur’s second EP Moongalba is a versatile and encapsulating record that could stand in as the soundtrack for any Indie film ever released.
The mighty four-song EP has a tune for every scene; climatic to mellow with the blend of twangy vocals and psychedelic synth. Each track starts with the prelude, showing us that Magenta Voyeur are the real deal with transitions into solid tunes with memorable vocals.
The first track Hex is the perfect opener, introducing the band’s synth-rock style. There’s a lot going on in this track featuring piano, full rock backing and punctuated by the vocals which are reminiscent of a young Daniel Johns.
Embers is like stepping inside after being out in the heat all day. This mellow tune is the ‘soothing balm’ of the EP, more laid back with a softer musical style and echoic vocals. The irony of such a cool vibe is that this track’s lyrics have the most poignant vocals, with our personal fave “you are not your body, you are your soul.”
With an opening reminiscent of a Bond film, Clear Skies is another great example of the versatility of this band. This track is a personal favourite – from the outset it says “we mean business.” Definitely one of the more rock-inspired tracks, the heavy guitars and trilling synth transports you to a high adrenaline plain.
Final track Entanglement is the breath you didn’t know you were holding from the previous track. It’s almost like Magenta Voyeur went “I don’t think you were ready for this jelly.” Don’t let the change in tempo fool you, this track will get your head moving. Similar to Hex, Entanglement features more synth but has a cheeky bass solo in the breakdown.
All in all Moongalba demonstrates Magenta Voyeur’s strong musicianship and a knack for switching up their style and making it work. Grab your copy of Moongalba HERE.
