Eighties icons Culture Club are back, and on the eve of frontman Boy George’s birthday, they’re wrapping up their Australian tour with one helluva party at Brisbane’s Riverstage.
Accompanied by a 12-piece band, the eccentric foursome has already wowed audiences in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne, playing all of the hits their fans adore. It’s been 16 years since they last graced Australian shores, and the group’s lead back-up singer Dee Dee Foster says they’re having a blast.
“Culture Club is back, and they are enjoying themselves on that stage. I think they are at points in their lives where they really appreciate life and realize that people simply love them and their music. We’re all having a ball on this tour,” she said.
An accomplished artist in her own right, Dee Dee has been honing her skills as a singer-songwriter since the age of five. She’s currently working on a feel-good new album, and says she enjoys having the best of both worlds – writing and performing her own songs, and performing with others.
Although she’s sung for the likes of Beyoncé, Rihanna, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder and most recently Anastacia, Dee Dee says that when it comes to Boy George and Culture Club, she’s never before supported people she admires so much.
“Let me just say I friggen love Boy George! When I first met him, I told him how big of a fan of his I was and he simply said that he hoped he wouldn’t disappoint me. That statement spoke volumes to me.”
“I’ve worked with artists that barely spoke or acknowledged the singers and band, but George is a gem. He cares a great deal about his singers and band. He’s happy, grounded, loyal and hilarious. There’s been a great deal of laughter on this tour.”
A high energy act onstage, Dee Dee says the Culture Club boys are just as raucous off stage, travelling like family and often wrestling each other like school boys.
“They’re always joking with each other and George will throw in an occasional wise crack about one of them to make us laugh. Coming to sound check is so much fun. I can always depend on Jon Moss to come to our microphone and say something funny and Roy and Mikey give the best greetings!”
With so much joy coming from the Culture Club camp, fans attending their show tonight will not be disappointed. Their show is set to be a full production with costumes and oodles of good vibes.
“Culture Club loves their fans and they are going to give them exactly what they want – a great show with all the great hits one after another and a few new songs from the new album!”
“Come ready to dance! You will not sit down during this show!”
Culture Club play Brisbane Riverstage tonight (Tuesday, 14 June). Tickets are still available here.
