Armed with her signature ukulele, a go-getter attitude and an abundance of renewed energy, Brisbane folk-pop princess, Miss Elm, is wiping the slate clean and inviting listeners along for the ride on her new single Clean Slate, out 4 August.
The moniker of talented singer-songwriter, Erin Harrington, Miss Elm shares her latest gem as a soloist, ditching her usual four-piece, full-band sound to take things back to basics in a less-is-more approach inspired by her journey in Brisbane-founded, global community I Heart Songwriting Club. An online movement that encourages members to write one song per week centred on a particular theme, I Heart Songwriting Club became the birthplace of Miss Elm’s new musical direction and latest release.
“Clean Slate was magical to write,” said Erin. “It was my very first week in the club and I was excited to get stuck into writing songs. Writing to the week’s theme of ‘Clean Slate,’ I picked up my ukulele, started singing some words and well, the rest came out fully formed. I felt the song write itself through me and it felt special.”
“Lyrically, Clean Slate summarises some very big changes that were happening in almost every aspect of my life and in terms of sound, I wanted this song to emanate the power of a fresh start – something simple and strong.”
Miss Elm’s penchant for wearing her heart on her sleeve and delivering intriguing melodic stories of life and love hasn’t changed, and she’s been busy working on more songs of similar vein.
“I’m excited to see where this new direction in my music takes me and have written some very powerful songs since Clean Slate that I’ve been previewing at my live shows. The Clean Slate launch show this weekend will be another step out of my comfort zone as I’ll be taking a very different approach to the traditional band setup I’m used to.”
Taking a leap and flying solo, Miss Elm is an empowering example of the well of abundance that can open when we take a chance and embrace change.
