Switching out a paintbrush for a guitar two short years ago, Brisbane’s newest alternative-folk wordsmith, Milow Pye, is stepping out of the shadows and bringing his private thoughts to light with the release of his debut EP These Are Private Words Addressed To You In Public, out 17 October.
Featuring glittering, soothing soundscapes and velvet-laced vocals, the tracks on These Are Private Words Addressed To You In Public wash over you like comforting and sympathetic lullabies, laying bare emotions society often deems confronting. It’s a courageous collection of work singer-songwriter Jordan Wearn (aka Milow Pye) says captures a lonelier time in his life.
“It’s a very delicate record about tiredness, loneliness, abandonment and spending a great deal of time in bed,” he said.
“There’s a lot of emotion condensed into short pieces of music. The songs are sometimes very small, representing a shrinking feeling. It’s a retelling of a time in my life I’ve not really spoken about, an outpouring of things that were meant to be heard but weren’t.”
Despite the melancholic tone of the music and stories conveyed, These Are Private Words Addressed To You In Public is a record of hope, a testament to the inner strength found in taking the time to acknowledge, and then face, your issues head on.
“I don’t want people to feel tired and lonely when they listen to the record, but instead to acknowledge those feelings are there and it’s okay to feel that way. Know there are ways to work through these feelings or alongside them. These songs come from times in my life when those feelings were rampant, but I’m not sad now – I embraced the beast and lived.”
Written over the past few years, These Are Private Words Addressed To You In Public was brought to life with the aid of local producer Mike Allen, and the mastering skills of Anthony Trimboli. The record officially launches with an intimate show at Brisbane’s Junk Bar tomorrow night.
“I’m really looking forward to the show. It’s my hope people will take something away from the music and the night, that’s unique to them.”
In the vein of Elton John’s Sad Songs (Say So Much), Milow Pye’s These Are Private Words Addressed To You In Public is a record that honours the depths of melancholy, darkness and trying periods we all experience at some point in time; a musical reminder to those who have suffered or are currently suffering, that you are not alone.
