Forget scoring a New Year’s Eve kiss, in Carla Thursday’s gorgeous new single NYE, it’s the friends we spend the last night of the year with that are the true markers of success.
An intimate tune inspired by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Missy Higgins, NYE (which drops 19 December) arrives just in time for you to round up your tribe and see in the new decade together somewhere divine.
“NYE is about my friends, and how despite living in different parts of the country and overseas, in the past we’d always try to make sure we were together on New Year’s Eve,” said Carla.
“It’s about modern-day friendships and how it can be hard to keep in touch long-distance. I think at some point, everyone has felt guilty that they’ve lost track of friends or haven’t made as much time for them as they’d like. For me, the song doubles as an apology to those friends I haven’t been able to see.”
Featuring picturesque city-scapes that imbue a sense of longing, nostalgia and subdued hopefulness, the accompanying NYE music video echoes sentiments of classic New Year’s Eve themed movies and sort of makes you wish you were at New York’s Times Square end-of-year affair.
“I wanted the video to be ambient with city-scapes and lights in the darkness to help convey the aesthetic of the song. I love that thematically it touches on things like loneliness and isolation amongst the bustle and noise.”
Having smashed her 2019 goal to release a single (she released two!), Carla has upped the ante on her 2020 resolutions, with her five-track debut EP due out next year. As for how she’ll be ringing in the new year, you can find her hosting a dashing New Year’s Eve house party alongside fellow local ladies Hannah Ana and Miss Elm.
