Here at MIMM HQ we’re always dreaming up quirky ways to introduce you to the talented folk that call the Brisbane music scene home. In our spanking new segment Mid-Week Musing we ask artists five questions based on a certain theme. This funky Q & A format is designed to give you amusing answers to questions you didn’t even know you needed!

Our inaugural muser is Aiden from Brisbane rock duo Trapped Admirals. Trapped Admirals formed in 2014 and released their debut EP Blue Shift in August this year. Why not give Blue Shift a spin while you read Aiden’s thoughts on the theme Musical Influences & Places.

MUSICAL INFLUENCES AND PLACES

Q1. If I had to pick someone to cover a song from Blue Shift it would be…

If we were sticking to local acts, it’d be really cool to hear Little Aztec do a version of Left for Dead with a full band compliment with the noise rock stuff they have going in the back. I’d like to think that our version is really raw and guttural whereas their version would just be this wall of noise.

Q2. If I wasn’t a part of the Brisbane music scene I’d be a part of…

The New York music scene. I’ve always thought that The Strokes and Vampire Weekend had really cool stories of forming in college and that sort of thing. There’s also the quaint little café that Jeff Buckley did in Sin-é that I always thought was really intimate and unique.

Q3. Three albums that have defined my life are…

When I was in high school I would listen to Blood Sugar Sex Magik by The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Grace by Jeff Buckley on shuffle for hours. Something about that specific era of The Chili Peppers really just got me going on guitar and Frusciante’s playing is mind-blowing on it.

More recently, Celebration Rock by Japandroids just blows my mind every time I listen to it. It might only be 40 minutes long, but it’s everything that a final flare of adolescence should be before the responsibilities of adulthood set in. Just loud, punchy and bombastic. To a degree it was what got Jarrod and I to stop being so hesitant about just playing out with two people, knowing that a sound that huge was possible.

Q4. If I could steal any artist’s back catalogue as my own, it would be…

Van Morrison, because I would really like to know what it’s like to write as many songs as he has. I can’t imagine what it’d be like to have hundreds of songs at my disposal knowing that there are fans who probably want to hear all of them at some stage of a show.

Early genre-hop Incubus stuff always interested me because of the challenge it looks like it presents transferring to a live audience. I’d really like to experience the intensity of playing some quick paced funk groove then going straight into some metal bridge and back to this weird atmospheric thing.

Q5. If I could have a music lesson with any artist (living or deceased) I would choose…

Josh Klinghoffer from Dot Hacker and the current guitarist of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Coming from someone who pretty much just plays guitar, I think he’d be really interesting to sit down with because he has all this knowledge about synths and he’s a fantastic keys player and drummer as well. He just approaches guitar in such an interesting, unique way that always surprises me.
