Brisbane singer-songwriter Kate Heart may just be the Queen of goal-setting. Making her dream of releasing her debut EP a reality this year (FYI she started production on her EP at 27 weeks pregnant – serious dedication!) Kate knows how to set goals and succeed. So with the New Year fast approaching, we asked her to share some tips on how to make New Year’s Resolutions (or ‘goals’ as they’re called any other time of the year) and actually see them through.

Here’s what she had to say…

  1. Write everything down.
I seem to be able to make things happen if I have written it down.I’m a massive fan of the whiteboard.I have one in my studio with a list of things that need to happen to bring whatever project I’m working on to life. Then I break it down into smaller things that need to happen to for each point. Lets just say I’m the queen of lists. Keep checking back to the original list to make sure you’re getting through it all.

  2. Reach out.
You can’t do everything. Well you can but you may have to say goodbye to sleep. Outsource and reach out to friends and family who can help out. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, play to your strengths and fill in the gaps with people whose strengths counterbalance your weaknesses.

  3. Be flexible.
A lot of things are out of your control. When something unexpected comes my way I take a deep breath in and try and solve it to the best of my ability. You never know things may turn out better than originally planned. You may not meet an original timeframe for a goal, but just do what you can with the resources you have.

  4. Take daily action.
I firmly believe if you do something towards your goal every day, even its just 10 minutes a day, you will get there. Consistent effort is key.

  5. Dream big.
Yes you need to start small and work hard on the little everyday steps, but when setting goals and yearly resolutions you need something to aspire to. Aim for extraordinary over ordinary every time.

  6. Have a supportive team.
There will be days when you think your goals are unattainable. The solution to this, is to surround yourself with people that can support you when the negative voices are talking too loud. You need honesty from those closest to you of course, but you need a community of close ones who at times believe in your more then you believe in yourself.

As for Kate’s New Year’s Resolutions? She’ll be working towards releasing two music videos and touring in 2016! Head over to her website to find out more and grab a copy of her debut EP Kate Heart (which by the way is the perfect soundtrack for writing goals). Here’s to achieving in 2016!
