A friend made through music is a friend for life. This rings true for the 20+ Brisbane Country and Americana artists taking to the stage at The Zoo, on Thursday 28 January for Country Conquers Cancer: A Love Song For Garry R. Wood.

Performing a mix of home-grown originals and iconic covers, this community will be banding together to raise vital funds for their friend Garry Wood who was recently diagnosed with stage three Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Funds will also be donated to the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland.

Local musician and Country Conquers Cancer organiser Byron Short, says he has been overwhelmed by the response from artists to help a fellow musician in need.

“Over 20 artists jumped at the opportunity to help. I’m very proud of this community for banding together as they have, lending their time and talent to this very worthy cause,” he said.

Gary is a talented Nashville-based multi-instrumentalist who has supported and befriended many musicians during his time working at Music City Hostel in Nashville, Tennessee. Byron met Garry when he was living at the hostel a few years ago, and says many of the other artists on the bill are also connected to Garry.

“Garry is a sweet guy with a great sense of humour and bucket loads of musical talent. He’s extremely grateful to everyone involved in this event. I like to think that our collective positivity and dedication to his cause has already contributed in some way to his healing.”

Local music lovers can show their support for Garry and the Leukaemia Foundation simply by purchasing a ticket to Country Conquers Cancer and enjoying the finest country and Americana music our city has to offer.

“It’s going to be an amazing night. Never before has a line-up of this magnitude been presented to a live audience in this Country/Americana scene in Queensland. It’ll be a once in a lifetime chance to see a plethora of incredibly talented artists sharing one stage, united for one cause.”

Raffle tickets and donation tins will also be available on the night for patrons who wish to contribute more. Tickets are available here, or are $15 on the door. We here at Music Is My Muse encourage all music lovers to get behind this fantastic cause!
