Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have heard the sweet tunes of Brisbane’s talented, and ever-growing, musical sisterhood. If not, then you’re in luck, because three of the city’s finest sisters of soul – Maja, Isabel and Livvia – are coming together for a show at The Bearded Lady this week.
Aptly named Sisters, the show, which is on this Thursday night, 23 June will be a spirited celebration of local women in music. With sultry, powerful vocals and thought-provoking lyrics, Maja, Isabel and Livvia will deliver hard-hitting soul numbers that will warm you from the inside out.
“I really love shows where there is that sense of community and everyone engages and feels like they’re a part of something. Fans can expect tasty harmonies, new tunes and to want to dance,” said Maja.
After performing at a similar show hosted by local songstress Georgia Rose, Maja says she was inspired to curate Sisters as a means of showing support for fellow female musicians.
“I think it’s important for women to band together and be supportive of each other’s work. Power imbalances still exist today, and supporting each other is how we move forward.”
Maja’s advice to up-and-coming female musicians is simple – be yourself, follow your own path and don’t worry about what everyone else is doing.
“Don’t be afraid to be different. I think if you can stay true to yourself, people will connect with that honesty and that’s what’s going to matter in the long run.”
“Oh and don’t ever let the man get you down – pun intended!”
