Taking band-mateship and a love of Netflix’s Orphan Black series to the next level is punk-popsters Being Jane Lane.
It’s their strong bond as friends and musical kinship that has seen these ladies thrive in their four years together, recently taking out the ‘People’s Choice Award’ at the Gold Coast Music Awards, and signing to local label Human Records.
Their sisters-sticking-together attitude is reflected in their favourite show, Orphan Black, which follows a clan of clone sisters (or “sestras) who band together against all odds.
“We’re hooked on the show’s storyline and the strong “sestra” message of sisters sticking together and working things out in good and bad times. Something that we do deal with being in a band with five people. We are all pretty close as friends and above everything we need to look out for each other as sisters, as well as band mates,” said bass player Louise Sanders.
These ladies will join their honorary “sestra” Roo, this Saturday night, to celebrate Roo’s inaugural year reviewing local bands on her flagship site Roo’s Live Experience.
To celebrate their impending show, and feed their Orphan Black obsession further, we asked each of the Being Jane Lane ladies to tell us more about their favourite Orphan Black character and what their chosen ‘soul sestra’ would bring to the party. Check out their answers (and transformations) below…
TEIGAN, LEAD SINGER | SOUL SESTRA: SARAH

Sarah Manning is boss, what’s not to love about her? She’s a bad-arse, punk lass from London with all the street smarts in the neighbourhood, with a fiercely loyal heart and heroic demeanour. She once stabbed a bitch in the eye with a pencil. That being said I think we basically have zero similarities, except maybe her penchant for bad decisions and avoiding responsibility (unless it’s related to her Sestra’s).
As a party guest, Sarah would be…
At the party in ‘that room with the door closed’ probably getting high and polishing off a bottle of whisky whilst inciting a cluster pash (like that one time). Likely though she wouldn’t even make it to the party for being on some CloneClub mission getting shot at, punched in the face and/or thrown out of a moving vehicle.
If Sarah showed up at a Being Jane Lane gig…
I honestly think she would dig it! She’d be rocking out at a show like Helena dancing in the club with the tail.
Sarah’s party motto…
Don’t drink alone, drink with a clone!
FEBE, GUITARIST | SOUL SESTRA: HELENA

Helena is terrifyingly adorable, brave and bloody weird. She has a cute, unique connection with each different character in the show. She is really overprotective of the people she loves. Even though she has experienced quite a series of unfortunate events, she still stands strong and powers through life. Our similarity? She loves food, I love food, WE BOTH LOVE FOOD!
As a party guest, Helena would be…
Dancing like a lunatic aka ‘opening up the pit’ to whatever song comes on….and then dies later from a stitch.
If Helena showed up at a Being Jane Lane gig…
She would have a really good time. She’d do her crazy dance and potentially stage dive and crowd surf on the audience.
Helena’s party motto…
PARTY! With lots of FOOD.
LOUISE, BASSIST | SOUL SESTRA: ALISON

All the clones have their own unique personalities and quirks, Alison being no exception. In all honesty at first she was really hard to like, a stuck up soccer mom: so it’s a wonder I can relate to her. Apart from loving a vodka or 7. But as you watch through the seasons, she has so many breakthroughs. There were moments of weakness, showing her as a real person which I really respected. Whether it was helping Donnie bury a body, or getting through rehab, she has overcome obstacle after obstacle, and made us love her time after time.
As a party guest, Alison would be…
Secretly drinking her flask of vodka, forcing Felix to stop her making a fool of herself.
If Alison showed up at a Being Jane Lane gig…
She would act too cool for the music, but after a few beverages have a good dance and praise us.
Alison’s party motto…
Drink more, think less.
KATE, GUITARIST | SOUL SESTRA: SARAH

Man, this is hard…. I seriously love all the Orphan Black characters for different reasons, and I feel like my personality and mood changes depending what situation I’m in and who I’m around. Part of me works in the corporate world, completed university, works long long hours for the Government and the other part of me plays music in a rock band, drinks beer and parties. I try to balance these two things and sometimes that’s hard. I feel like I’m probably most like Sarah in that sense. She kind of fell into Beth’s job at the very beginning and worked as a detective for a while. Sometimes I feel like that’s me, I fell into my job (after a long four years at university) but you cannot keep me from my passion and purpose – music.
As a party guest, Sarah would…
Captivate people and demand attention at first. Probably do heaps of shots, until something dramatic happened (then she’d make it her job to get to the bottom of it). Toward the end of the night, she’d probably get too drunk and get into intense conversations with people… (I pretty much just explained myself).
If Sarah showed up at a Being Jane Lane gig…
She would dig it, but play it cool. You know the type, sitting at the back of the room, kind of nodding along…. yeah, that’s her.
Sarah’s party motto…
Shots!
KAYLA, DRUMMER | SOUL SESTRA: COSIMA

Cosima is intelligent, focused, ambitious, honest, warm, and courageous. She’s got some sweet dance moves (although, I feel Helena is the clear winner in the moves department), she doesn’t take things at face value and she wears her heart on her sleeve. I’m a combination of Cosima and Helena, but I’ll stick to Cosima, especially since Febe placed my face onto Cosima’s body, so I’m going to roll with it. I do wear my heart on my sleeve in my own personal way, so overall the Cosima side to me isn’t too bad.
As a party guest, Cosima would be…
With Delphine, drinking wine, or dancing and having a chat to people she vibes with. She’d be a good party guest. A guest that’s like “hey I’m going to be in your space but will keep respectfully to myself ”.. that’s a good type of party guest right? You know the ones that aren’t all up in your business, don’t destroy stuff or people, enjoy their own company but are there if you want to hang and can make their own fun.
If Cosima showed up at a Being Jane Lane gig…
She’d respond with joyous enthusiasm clearly.
Cosima’s party motto…
Party!
